Even I, who normally doesen't like racing games, bought Excite Truck and started playing.
The graphics are great for being a release title (at least in America), with beautiful water effects, big landscapes, sunsets, blur effects and so on.
The background music is also good.
And even if you're not a rock-lover, you'll find that it fits the game.
You can even create your own custom-made soundtracks, assuming that you have an SD-card and some MP3-files.
There's also a multiplayer mode, for up to two people.
Here you'll compete for the most stars (you actually progress through the game by getting stars).
Beyond that, you can unlock new difficulties, tracks, trucks and paint jobs for the trucks.
I give this 4/5.
game feels short after awhile but it is very fun must buy.
PS: Load your SD Card up with Mp3's and you got a new soundtrack for your game. A+
There are two main modes - excite race and challenge. Excite race is the meat of the game, with 4 difficulties plus a mirror mode, trucks and paint jobs to unlock and lots of stunts. Challenge is divided into gates, where you have to get through checkpoints before time runs out; rings, where you jump through (you guessed it) rings worth different amounts of points; and smash, where you ram enemy trucks on an open landscape.
Controls
To play, you hold the Wii remote sideways like a NES pad. The d-pad is used for menu selections and boosting in races, while 1 and 2 are brake and accelerate. Steering is done by tilting the remote. It works well, but when I first started I found myself boosting when I needed to turn sharply.
Graphics
Solid models and nice looking trucks, but nothing special. Draw distance is good enough not to notice unless you find yourself on a huge jump. Then you can see the trees gaining detail as you get closer.
Sound
The engines roar nicely, and sound effects come from the wiimote when you smash up another truck or overheat, which is a nice touch, and helps you to tell who is overheating in versus matches. The built in music is the usual generic stuff, but if you have an SD card with mp3s on it you can choose to have them play in game.com It's not up to the level of Xbox custom soundtracks, but it is another nice touch.
Gameplay
When you start you have to do a quick tutorial, which teaches the basics of controlling the trucks. There are other tutorials you can do at any time to learn more about advanced controls and stunts. Stunts are very important as they are the main way of getting the points you need to pass stages and progress in the game. They range from the basic (drift, air) through the dangerous (tree runs - passing close by trees without crashing, truck smashes - take out your opponents) to the downright cool (air spins, truck throws - warping the environment and throwingrivals in the air). You get a rank for each race depending on how many points you get. A B is needed to pass the race, but if you get S ranks (super) in every race there's a special surprise instore. Each truck you get 3 S ranks in, or race 10 times gets an alternative paint job, and there are several different colours for each paint job. You unlock trucks through the game, and they all have different stats for speed, handling etc.
Scattered around each track are icons you can drive through. Some change the terrain of the tracks to make jumps and dips, while some give you extra speed and invulnerability from trees. The latter (a POW icon) lets you use shortcuts and get super truck smashes more easily, though both are possible without.
overall
Excite truck is a fun, but quite short game (I've had it for a week or so, not playing constantly, and I'm pretty near completing it) but there is excellent replay value, a good 2 player mode, and lots of stuff to unlock. It's intense, and can be frustrating, but the races are short enough that you can always have one more go to nail that elusive S rank. I give it......
