My attempt at a 'moai' - a stone effigy many of which exist on Rapa Nui (Easter Island). These were hugely important in the native islanders religion of 'Ancestor Worship'. Indeed such was the desire to build these figures that every single tree on the island was cut down in the construction process, thereby hastening the decline of the civilisation they were constructed to protect. This version has 'eyes', these were originally made from coral and shells but have perished in the centuries since there construction.
These figures were also part of the 'Tiki' cultural phenomenon which began in America in the 1950s. Polynesian artefacts, mixed-drinks imbued with rum and exotic fruit juices, a love of 'kitsch' and a general sense of fun with the ability to not take oneself too seriously, were all ingredients in the cultural frisson.
