Ten Canoes is a film made in 2006 featuring Australian aboriginal actors. It's a charming and affecting folk-tale on unrequited love and the strictures of societal hierarchy. Gulpilil plays two roles in different time-frames in the movies. In both he plays a lovelorn youth who must give up his aspirations on a girl in favour of his older brother in order to satisfy the demands of society. It is he who is the recipient of the 'lesson' which forms the major part of the film's narrative.
